Some things have a sentimental value that no amount of money can replace - like the old Louis Vuitton rucksack I received for this commission.
Material with a story
The commissioner wanted a very special gift for her friend: a DIY dog collar made from her friend's beloved but worn rucksack. The rucksack was in use, with normal wear and tear and still full of usable details: patterns, straps, fittings, pieces of leather.
The first step to making a DIY dog collar
First I measured the current collar as a reference, in full length and the set size. Then I got to work on the leather of the rucksack.
Armed with scissors and a seam ripper, I took the rucksack apart. It is important to proceed carefully here in order to gain as much material as possible.
The next step was to mark out the lengths. I had to piece a little to continue the original pattern. Finally, the areas were cut out and I was ready to sew!
Making the DIY dog collar sturdy
Two is better than one, so I both glued and stitched the leather. It was important to me that the transitions between the pieces were firmly sewn, that the collar remained adjustable and that the buckles were secure.
Individual DIY dog collar
It was far from perfect, but it was absolutely unique. As my sewing skills are rather modest, I was all the more surprised by the result - and even a little proud.
FAQ?! – DIY Dog Collar
Can any material be used for a dog collar?
No, the material needs to be strong and durable. Leather, sturdy fabrics, and robust hardware are suitable. Thin or fragile materials are not recommended.
Is a handmade dog collar safe?
Yes, if it is securely stitched or glued and the buckles are firmly attached. The collar should not tear and must remain adjustable.
Do I need a sewing machine to make a DIY dog collar?
Not necessarily. Small leather pieces can be sewn by hand, but a sewing machine makes the process easier and ensures greater durability.
Can I repurpose an old designer item (e.g., a backpack or bag) for a dog collar?
Yes, that’s possible and makes the collar truly unique. Just make sure the material is still intact and strong enough.
How do I care for a handmade dog collar?
Wipe it with a damp cloth and check regularly for stability. Leather can be treated with leather conditioner to keep it supple.
