Fly spray for sensitive horses
Some horses react sensitively to certain oils or vinegar.
Here is a gentle alternative:
Use 500 ml black tea as a base.
Only mix it with 10–15 drops of lavender oil.
Optional: chamomile or marigold oil 5–10 drops each.
No tea tree, citronella or clove oil.
Be sure to test it on a small area first!
Fly spray extra strong
For days with lots of horse flies, stagnant air or longer rides:
As basic recipe, but add 5–10 drops of clove oil or neem oil.
Please omit tea tree oil!
For robust horses, do not use on eczema types.
Brush or wash off with water after riding to remove residues.
Storage and expiration
Store the fly spray in a cool, light-protected and airtight place, ideally in the refrigerator. If stored correctly, the spray will keep for 7–10 days. After that, it loses its effectiveness and freshness, then simply reapply.
Application and instructions
Do not spray the fly spray on mucous membranes, eyes or open wounds. Always test first in case of intolerance or sensitive skin. Do not use on foals or pregnant mares. Use clove, tea tree or neem oil sparingly. Do not use citrus oils in direct sunlight, as this can lead to sunburn.
Summer here I come!
With this DIY fly spray, you can give your horse protection and care at the same time - customisable, alcohol-free and skin-friendly. Whether sensitive or robust - with a little finesse, you can customise your spray to suit your horse.
